Start your directory Application by determining your NAICS code if you don't already have one

Follow instructions below to determine your NAICS code.

NAICS COMPLETION

One of the requirements for completing your business application is identifying your NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) code. The government uses this four-to-six-digit number to determine your type of industry. Every company in North America should have one. If you do not know your company’s NAICS code, you can search for it on the NAICS Association website. If you cannot find your code or do not have one, you can determine your company’s NAICS code by following the instructions below or going to census.gov/naics.

Structure of NAICS

The structure of NAICS is hierarchical. The first two digits of the code represent general categories of economic activities divided into 20 sectors. The NAICS sectors and their two-digit codes distinguishing their activities are below:

11 Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting

21 Mining, Quarrying, and Oil and Gas Extraction

22 Utilities

23 Construction

31-33 Manufacturing

42 Wholesale Trade

44-45 Retail Trade

48-49 Transportation and Warehousing

51 Information

52 Finance and Insurance

53 Real Estate and Rental and Leasing

54 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services

55 Management of Companies and Enterprises

56 Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services

61 Educational Services

62 Health Care and Social Assistance

71 Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation

72 Accommodation and Food Services

81 Other Services (except Public Administration)

92 Public Administration

NAICS uses a six-digit coding system to identify industries and their placement in this Classification system. The first two digits identify the sector, the third digit designates the subsector, the fourth digit designates the industry group, the fifth digit designates the industry, and the sixth digit designates the national industry. A zero as the sixth digit indicates the U.S. industry is the same as the NAICS industry.
